In exterior and interior construction, cladding refers to the vertical applications of flatwork.
Exterior cladding may refer to the application of one material over another, such as flatwork over a substrate.
Interior cladding may be used for fireplace overmantles, trimming out the firebox opening on a fireplace, covering the shroud of a kitchen hood, covering drywall returns, or for wainscots.
Quoins are the corner stones that anchor the edge of the building wall. Quoins may be structural or decorative. Architects and builders specify quoins to give the impression of strength and firmness to the outline of the building.
The most common form of decorative quoins uses an alternative pattern of rectangles that wrap around the wall, mimicking the pattern of stone blocks or brick as they would wrap around a corner and thus join the two walls. The edges of these blocks are often beveled, and almost always 2” thick or thicker, as they stand proud of the adjacent wall materials.
